Dowsing - The Conscious Connection
Jim Lyons
What I want to try to do today is to demonstrate how we can make a link between the world of mainstream science and the world of spirituality. This has been the theme of my research work for several years.
Before I get into the nitty-gritty of this presentation, I would just like to let you know a little about the Dowsing Research Group. Even people from within the BSD often ask me what we do. In fact, it’s the oldest individual group within the BSD. It was established in September 1993 at St John’s University in York, when the BSD Congress was held there. It was a very memorable, very international occasion, and (the TV personality) Michael Bentine was one of the chief speakers. At that Congress, Guy Hudson suggested to me that it was about time that we formed a group to gather together the various scientific aspects of dowsing. I had been thinking along the same lines myself for some time. The following year, we realised that we also needed a group to address a wider audience, so we also set up the Earth Energies Group, chaired by that wonderful man Billy Gawn. We worked together for a decade, but when there was a reorganistaion of the BSD, in 2003, we didn’t fit into the new structure - and we ended up, metaphorically, ‘in the corner’ - which is why many people who have joined the BSD subsequently don’t know much about us. However, our work has been continuing, quietly. We have a very small group, but a wide range of disciplines - which includes, for example, a Buddhist monk. We have got to the point, where we are cutting across a number of disciplines, and we have reached the point where we can seriously think about addressing, what I would like to term, ‘the conscious link’.
My own background is as an engineer, both aeronautical and electrical. Although I am fascinated by the science behind dowsing, it’s what you can do with it that is really of interest to me.
On the one hand we have mainstream science, and on the other we have spirituality. How do we bring these two outlooks together? It’s how we bridge the gap that is my main source of interest. Five years ago I put up a slide of a rope bridge. I used to say that I could see the other side, but the bridge between the two banks was very, very shaky. What we are aiming for is something that resembles the Sydney Harbour Bridge - good, solid, British engineering!
When you reduce a diagram of the sub atomic structure of an atom from three dimensions to two, for example by shining a light through a model of that structure onto a screen, you end up with a pattern that has all the complex geometry that you also find in many crop circles and earth energy patterns. So, straight away, you have something that comes right out of quantum physics that you can also dowse in a field in the westcountry. I would also like to show you a wonderful flounder pattern, which comes from the world of Theosophy. This is using the mind to focus in on matter. By focusing in, nearer and nearer, this is the shape that emerges. That shape has all the numbers in it that you also find in the sub-atomic structure model - and also all the numbers you find in earth energy patterns. So, here we have anchor points already. What we have to do is to draw it all together, to demonstrate that this is a coherent worldview.
The next pattern I want to explain is a diagram, which is of a chunk of a wave. This is the representation of the wave of consciousness. We understand the mathematics of it quite well.
In science, we have two different types of particles. Understanding these is crucial to physics, but it is crucial to dowsing too. On the one hand, we have ‘hard lumps’ of material, such as protons and electrons. These Fermions, discovered by the Italian-born seminal quantum physicist Enrico Fermi, can be considered to be the hardware of the universe. On the other hand, we have another sort of particle (although they are not strictly particles, but we’ll come back to that) called Bosons, named after the Indian physicist Satyendra Bose, who first discovered them. The bosons are effectively the software of the universe.
Taking the analogy of a computer system, we could describe dowsing as Cosmic Googling. Full stop. The whole of the universe is both ‘intelligent’ and ‘self-organising’. It is, in essence, a grand computer - and you, with your three pounds of grey matter are, in effect, a modem on the network. This is not the way mainstream science would look at it, but it is such a graphic explanation that even young children have no problem at all in understanding the concept. Sometimes, I despair that university professors have so much difficulty with it!
At the Large Hadron Collider, run by CERN in Switzerland, they claim to have discovered the key particle that moves from the Fermionic world to the Bosonic world. It’s called the Higgs Boson. This whole scenario is now in the public realm. The significance of the Higgs Boson is that it is the link between the unconscious world and the conscious world. It is the bridge between the two. Mainstream science does not really yet appreciate the significance of what it has apparently discovered. The Higgs Boson comes out of the Higgs Field, first proposed by Peter Higgs in 1963. The Higgs field is effectively the information field of all dowsers. So, the component parts are all in place.
At this point, I should emphasise that the interpretation of our world is all to do with language - as some of you will have heard me say many times before. Dowsers call it this; mainstream scientists call it that. But the two worldviews are very much linked together.
Mainstream science essentially started with the work of Francis Bacon in the 1600s. Following him, the next significant person to get involved in the subject was Rene Descartes, who wrote a famous treatise about the relationship between mind and matter. As he saw it, mind was on one side and matter was on the other. The two were quite separate. He could really only handle the matter side of things, as studying the mind led him into an area dominated by politics and religion so, as a researcher, he felt it was best to leave that aspect alone. However, his colleague, Baruch Spinoza, working in the Netherlands, had a completely opposite philosophy. He felt that the universe was very much as I have already described - that the universe is, effectively, ‘the mind’. He felt that mind and matter were interlinked - that matter was embedded within mind. If we measure the quantities of the component parts of the universe, matter comprises only about 4% of the energy that we can find in the cosmos.
Around 1900, Max Planck effectively created our understanding of the quantum world. One of the interesting things that came out of Planck’s work was that he found that things had certain frequencies, certain wavelengths, certain limits. Yet when the model of the atom was put together, much of this work was totally ignored. So, the Bohr model of the atom did not take on board much of what Planck had already discovered. It was at that point, that one of the great problems of modern science emerged.
The world is held together by a force that we call ‘gravity’, which even today no one really understands! We know how to deal with it, how to manipulate it, how to send spacecraft to Mars on the strength of Newton’s equations about it - but we still don’t know what it actually is. It seems to be some sort of invisible force between various objects.
Consciousness is somehow linked to that. Newton is supposed to be the first of the great natural philosophers, but in my opinion, he was actually the last of the guys who were dealing with ancient knowledge. He was very much a transition man in many ways.
I would like to tell you a little bit about torsion. It fits into what has been referred to as spacetime, but I prefer to call it timespace. Because time, which is the great problem, really only works in the Fermionic domain. Once you move into consciousness, time isn’t there. That’s very, very important - and usually totally ignored. Timespace depends on the speed of light - and we will see when we come to discuss the torsion field in the Bosonic domain, that we can forget about the speed of light, because it doesn’t exist there; it’s not relevant.
At this point I would like to talk a little more about the philosophy behind dowsing. I started taking an interest in ancient sites at the age of 14, when I first went to Stonehenge. I remember leaning my bicycle against the stones - try doing that today! That visit prompted a lifelong interest in such things. Ancient sites have an astonishingly long history. When I was at school, I was taught that history began with the Sumerians in about 6,000BC. Nowadays we can go back another 3-4,000 years to Gobekli Tepe, on the Turkish/Iraqi border, which is now recognized as the site of the first temple. Dating from around 6,000BC, during the Mesolithic period, we have the Thornborough Henges, in North Yorkshire - three differently sized rings that are surrounded by banks, rather than the usual ditches. The three henges are not lined up precisely; they are slightly offset, rather like the pyramids at Giza, which were constructed 3,000 years later. The Thornborough site is laid out in that manner because of the earth energy patterns there. The disalignment, if I can call it that, is dependent on numbers, on geometry. In passing, I will just mention that the number associated with the Thornborough Henges is 9 and the number associated with the Giza pyramids is 7, but I won’t go into the supporting mathematics today. So, in a way, Thornborough is the UK’s anchor point, at around 3,500 - 4,000BC.
Around 1,000 years BC, the Mayan civilization emerged. Two years ago, I had a wonderful time working with the chief anthropologist of the National Museum in Mexico City - working on (the pyramid at) Teotihuacan. I was astonished to find that he knew absolutely nothing about earth energies and dowsing. I couldn’t believe that a man with such an enormous knowledge of the Mayan civilisation knew absolutely nothing about why the structures there were laid out in the way that we find them today. I was able to discover the reasons behind the shapes and the layouts of their buildings. Interestingly, the mathematical numbers associated with them are different from what we have found in Europe.
A comparable, and very topical, and recent area of research is the pyramids in Bosnia. It’s something that has only emerged in the last decade. It’s a set of conical pyramids, close to Sarajevo - and I am pleased to say that a few of us in this room are going there in a fortnight’s time. I feel there’s a lot still to discover there.
Going back further, around 7,000BC yogic science started to unearth important information. I expect a few of you here today are yoga enthusiasts - and I know we have at least one yoga teacher among us. I have been doing yoga myself for about 25 years - working with this force that is called chi or prana. It is the fundamental energy of the universe. It is the conscious energy of the universe. If you meditate, then you are dealing with chi or prana. It is how you interact with this energy that is so important - because the geometry and structure of your energy field is exactly the same as that of the earth. Are you surprised? Well, you don’t need to be. The angles and the spirals are in very much the same configuration. It shows that you have emerged from the structure of the earth.
I would like to move on to discuss the cosmic vortex (and the concept of the vortex is something that turns up a great deal in my research). There is a layered, structured energy field all around you. People talk about ‘their’ energy field, but that field doesn’t belong to them. It’s not ‘your’ field, you belong to it! That energy field can be compared to the little vortices you see in a stream of water flowing past some stones. You see all these turbulent little whirlpools, which are affecting everything around them in the fluid. That perspective is absolutely key to understanding dowsing. It illustrates that the important thing is the ‘water’, and the vortices emerge from within that water. You and I emerge from within the cosmic conscious vortex.
It seems like a completely back-to-front way of thinking - but at times, it’s only by turning things inside out that we can grasp any sort of understanding of what’s really going on.
The Universal Atom (or AU, as it is sometimes called) is identical, structure-wise, to your vortex. If you go back to the images in ancient philosophy, you find egg-shapes and snake-shapes. These are the vortex filaments that wind forever around absolutely everything. That’s why the snake is so important; it’s actually a vortex flow. With an better understanding of these concepts, we are starting to pull everything together.
Everything in the universe is linked to the diatonic scale (which you find in music). It is a universal set of harmonic ratios. I can dowse a person’s aura and show them their red level, their orange level, their yellow level and so forth. (Jim puts up an image of a person, showing their auric energy field. He then shows, using his dowsing rods, that the person’s aura is proportionate to their energy density, by first indicating the depth of field of the neutral background and then dowsing the comparable field of the person, which is significantly greater.) This shows that the spiraling vortex around you is key, absolutely key, to how you manifest yourself - and to your health, and to everything about you. It’s all to do with this spiraling energy, which is, in turn, linked to (but is not identical with) these torsion waves that I mentioned earlier.
(Jim puts up another image). On the left hand side, we have the traditional way of looking at the cosmos, with you inside it, and your consciousness stuck inside the three pounds of grey matter in your head. It’s absolute garbage! On the right hand side, we have you in the cosmos with your three pounds of grey matter, but your consciousness is identical to everything else outside of it. Matter is a very small part of the mind.
Let’s go on to have a look at torsion waves in a little more detail, because understanding torsion waves are the key to understanding everything else. On the one hand we have acoustic waves, which simply go backwards and forwards. Then we have transverse magnetic waves (which makes them sound more complicated that they really are). It’s important to point out at this stage that the dowsing wave is not electromagnetic. (Jim repeats this affirmation three times!) We then have seismic waves - the waves that vibrate through the earth. Superficially, they seem to be going up and down, but in fact, if you look closely they spiral around. These are waves that interact very strongly with the surface of the earth, which is largely crystalline - and contains significant amounts of quartz. The waves going through the earth, through the crystalline quartz are, in fact, torsion waves. While the initial research was carried out about a hundred years ago, at the turn of the last century, it is only now that any significant amount of effort is being put into understanding the ‘spinning’ nature of seismic waves. Torsion waves emanating from the earth are a focal point of intense investigation at the moment. Torsion waves from the sun are absolutely crucial to climate change. Torsion waves come from the solar flares on the sun and interact with the shell of torsion wave energy that surrounds the earth - which we then experience as the aurora borealis. Torsion waves are key to the whole scenario.
So, what does all this mean? Nikola Tesla (who Derek mentioned earlier) was born in what today is Croatia, close to Dubrovnik. Later, he emigrated to the US, where he joined the Westinghouse Corporation. He was the man who was effectively responsible for what has become the worldwide power generation system. He invented three-phase electricity, amongst many other things. Many of you may be aware that he developed a technique, using vibrating energy within a tower that interacted with the energy at the surface of the earth to create an electric piston effect. In principle, using a development of this method, it is possible to provide free electricity to everyone. Needless to say, his backers knobbled him rather quickly! - and, sadly, Tesla was effectively cut off from contributing to science from then on. He was, perhaps, the most remarkable electrical engineer of all time. But Tesla also carried out the most fundamental work on torsion waves.
(Jim demonstrates, by dowsing, that by twisting a spiral energy wave - using a coiled spring - the amount of torsion energy present can be increased many fold). In theory, there is no boundary, no limit to the amount of energy coming out of a torsion wave. That torsion wave travels at 1,000,000,000 times the speed of light, as best it can be estimated. Consequently, for all practical purposes, here = there, when you perform this twisting motion of a torsion wave. Time no longer appears in the equations, which is absolutely crucial to understanding why dowsing works. Torsion waves permeate the whole universe. They were discovered, pre-Tesla, by a Russian named Myshkin, although Tesla worked out the mechanics of putting the theory into practice.
To this scenario, let me introduce something scientists call topological structures - ‘shapes’ to you and I. Mathematically, there are only three types of topological structures that can exist - (1) the point particle, that has no dimensions whatsoever (and consequently from which you can’t build a three-dimensional universe!) (2) the sphere and (3) the toroid (or torus). When I first started to study physics about 50 years ago, I used to think that the concept of the point particle was nonsense (although it was part of the theoretical basis of quantum physics for several decades). On entering my eighth decade, I can now say, with some confidence, that it really is nonsense! When I started to become interested in the science of dowsing in earnest, about 20 years ago, I couldn’t make my mind up as to whether the underlying understanding of dowsing was based on spherical or toroidal mathematics. It took me about 10 years of work before I realised that it is, in fact, both. Sometimes the toroid has a sphere around it, and sometimes there is a sphere inside a toroid. The two work hand in hand. If we look at the structure of a distant galaxy through the Hubble Telescope, we can see this in action. What Hubble is showing us is the true structure of the cosmos - every feature fits inside one another - the Russian Doll principle. We see that everything, from cosmological distances down to quantum levels has got the same, basic topological structures. If we follow the mathematical conjectures, we are only allowed those two shapes - and this fits beautifully with the work that we are doing with dowsing research.
I was delighted when Hamish Miller, another remarkable man, invited me to join him in the production of a DVD, produced by Tim Walter, at the Merry Maidens stone circle in Cornwall. What we discovered together was what underpins dowsing is the projection of consciousness - thought - from one place to another instantaneously. To do this, we don’t need mobile phones, nor fibre-optic cables - we can just do it with thought. The key is understanding how this mechanism fits together.
I am now going to do a bit of dowsing, which will show you the structure of the universe. (Jim displays both spherical and toroidal objects - in this case a ball and a rubber ring. Around a physical sphere he is able to demonstrate that there are a number of concentric ‘rings’ of energy.) These are not rings of energy - they are tubes of energy, toroidal tubes. The tubes get closer together as we move out, until we can no longer distinguish one from another. The ratio of the distance from the centre of each tube to the centre of the next is 0.891. So what? Well, 0.891 is, in fact, a major tone on the diatonic scale. It’s pure Pythagorian harmonics. To go back to the model, if I take the ratio of the distance between the centre of the sphere and the outmost detectable tube, you will find it is about 9. This simple, crude model displays the exact geometry of a mature galaxy. So, when you dowse the geometry of something like this, perhaps on your kitchen table, you are recreating the exact geometry of the Milky Way. There must be something significant in that! The discus-shape that emerges in simple experiments like this also appears in many crop circles. It has a long history. It emerges out of your conscious interaction with any object, which always generates that geometry.
Right at the start, I mentioned this funny-shaped wave between science and spirituality. It is something that came out of work that was undertaken in Russia back in the 1970s - and it’s called Global Scaling Theory. This work originated through studying the scale and sizes of insects. If you measure and plot on a graph the dimensions of 1,000 different sorts of insects, instead of a steady progression from small to large, what you find is that there are a lot of species at a similar size, then a gap where there are very few, and then another large group a bit further up the graph - and so on. This unexpected distribution led to the derivation of an equation to predict similar such GST findings in other aspects of reality. Of great relevance here is that it is the precise mathematical structure of the Bosonic wave, which is associated with the Bosonic field - and this is the type of wave used in dowsing.
Stephen Hawking recently announced the discovery that ‘Black Holes are not black, they are grey!’ I think it’s the best bit of news that we have had in science for 50 years. It’s all due to the work of the Norwegian scientist, Kristian Birkeland, who carried out a lot of research into the Aurora Borealis in the early years of the 20th century. He discovered its structure and created the mathematics of it. He discovered that it is really composed of two strands of spiraling energy, which are twisted together - two threads of electricity that spiral for enormous distances around the earth. In fact, there are vortex fields across the cosmos, from galaxy to galaxy - and the galaxies are linked together by these currents. They are just like beads on a gigantic necklace, over mega parsecs of space.
I spent some time last year with a group at Albuquerque, in the US. After 100 years or so, they are in the process of reproducing Birkeland’s Terella. It’s a model of a great section of the globe, showing how all of these electric currents, these moving particles, weld together.
In the 1960’s, the Swedish electrical engineer, Hannes Alfven, was the first person to come up with the concept of the plasma universe. Unfortunately for him, in his day there was no Hubble Telescope and he could not acquire the hard data to substantiate his hypothesis. However, his work has now been proven by Hubble and other such devices. He showed that the universe is essentially composed of an electric plasma. So, there are not just solids, liquids and gases, but there are plasmas too. In fact, plasma makes up over 99% of the universe! What we mean by ‘plasma’ is individual bits of an atom, floating around but not joined up to anything. It is actually a more familiar concept than you might think, as all the fluorescent lights that you have in your kitchen are actually plasma-based devices. Plasmas permeate the whole of the cosmos. Hannes Alfven not only worked out the mathematics of the plasma universe, but he also invented a completely new branch of physics, known as magnetohydrodynamics (sic). He showed that throughout the universe we have the magneto (magnetic) hydro (fluid) dynamism (movement or flow). This is really quite staggering, because that particular fluid is self-organising - ie it brings itself into patterns. And the patterns it brings itself into are exactly those same shapes and glyphs that we find everywhere, when we are dowsing. The very shapes that you and I find on the earth can all be found to be derived from his equations. We now actually know what these things are.
To demonstrate the universal application of these discoveries, let me do a bit of dowsing on an energy line, which I found here earlier. (Jim finds by dowsing two interconnected spirals, one inside the other.) If I was to work out the angle of connectedness of these two spiral lines, I can assure you it would be 35.265°, which is the exact angle of the DNA spiral in your body. We have evolved from the cosmos. In fact, we could scale up a DNA spiral to the size of a nebula running through the universe - 2 to 3 million light years across.
Some while ago, Russian scientists undertook a great deal of work on the vibrational structure of the earth. They found that it is based on the shapes we find in the geometry of the Greek mathematicians. Their energetic model of the earth consisted of two linked tetrahedra, which contained vertices angled at 14.971°, which my friend, and long-standing BSD member, Bob Sephton, noted in the layout of numerous stone circles many years ago. You will be familiar with the red spot of Jupiter, which also contains the angle 14.971° - and, of course, the downward spiraling energy Bermuda Triangle!
Again, to demonstrate simply the universality of this mathematics and geometry, we have the patterns that are produced by the tapping of a drum covered in a fine layer of sand - and again in the patterns of crop circles. These are just standing waves forming natural patterns, using the application of cosmic mathematics.
I believe this is how crop circles are formed. It’s the electrical discharge from underground water, which sets up vortex waves in the Bosonic field. We have a similar phenomenon with the toroidal rings on the surface of the ocean, produced by the movement and breathing of whales underwater. On several occasions, I created some of these potential mathematical patterns on my computer, based on the wave theory that I have outlined today, only to find that those patterns appeared in the field shortly thereafter. I gave up at that point, as I felt I’d got the message! But it just goes to show how closely your conscious can be linked to the earth energies around you.
Earth energy lines are helical lines; three-dimensional patterns: essentially flowing north-south/east-west. All the 13,000 mediaeval churches in Britain, have basically the same pattern of energy lines - and where the lines cross over, they create acupuncture points on the earth, composed of toridian lines, with rings around them. They are absolutely universal, across all five continents. As many dowsers have found, the energy in the lines changes over at the equinoxes and the solstices.
I’ll just finish by showing you a couple of relevant experiences that I have had over the years, which may help to illustrate these concepts. I was asked to dowse a standing stone at Hazelwood House in Devon, many years ago. The stone is located close to a river and here is a photo of me walking towards it along an energy line, being chased along by a columnar vortex (shown on the image). When I got to the centre of the stone, I dowsed the conical vortex that is the universal shape of all energy fields. When we blow it up (shows enlarged image of same photo) and we look at it in more detail, we get this beautiful upward spiral that I talked about earlier.
And finally, here is one that was taken at last year’s Congress (BSD Conference, Cirencester, September 2013 - shows image). That’s me touching the new quartz stone that had been erected earlier in the year. You can see that column of torsion energy rising above me. (Jim dowses the energy pattern shown on the image, indicating its height and its conical shape.) There are many more examples of this type of torsion energy field.
We now understand the nature of the energy field. We understand how it interacts with consciousness. The human detector for this is your pineal gland - your ‘third eye’ - and, incidentally, it also shows how birds navigate. They do not navigate using the earth’s magnetic field, per se, but they do navigate using the torsion waves emanating from the earth’s magnetic field. The various columnar vortices are just waypoints and markers. Effectively, they have their own on-board GPS system.
I have only had time today to touch on a few aspects of this torsion wave scenario. We have a massive amount of work still to do - and I would like you all to participate in this process. We have now launched a Dowsing Research Group Website, which will hopefully contain a great deal of this information in more detail. Watch this space!
At long last, we now know the mechanism that enables dowsing to work. I haven’t had time to talk today about what goes on inside the head. But, our hearing system has a lot to do with the detection of torsion waves.
So, in summary, forget about electromagnetics, think about torsion waves that are faster than the speed of light. We are in the process of linking together earth energy spirals and chakras - the ancient and the modern.
